Honey Whole Wheat Bread – Easy, Delicious And Healthy

Can you make honey whole wheat bread with a bread maker? Making bread with a bread maker is a major time saver, but you want to make sure that your bread is worthwhile. It needs to taste good (if not great!), and it should really also be fairly easy to make. The easiest option is to simply buy ready made bread machine mixes.

So which ones are worth trying out? Well, I decided to have a look for you and I found several good ones. But I want to start with this honey whole wheat bread mix. Whole wheat bread is a lot healthier. The grains have not been refined, as in white bread, meaning that the nutrients are still there.

This bread machine mix is called Honey Whole Wheat Bread Mix. It’s one of the Hodgson Mill Bread series. This is what Amazon says about it:

  • Case of six, 16- ounce boxes (total of 96 ounces)
  • Made with whole grain, hard spring wheat flour; whole grain, white wheat flour; unbleached, enriched flour
  • Naturally sweetened with pure honey, not processed sugars; cholesterol free
  • Prepare in a bread machine or in the oven
  • Stone-milled in the Ozarks in Gainesville, Missouri
This bread mix has been made for 1-1/2 lb bread machines, but can easily be adjusted for smaller 1 lb machines. You can simply use the whole wheat setting on your bread machine. Or if you don’t have a bread machine yet, get one with a whole wheat setting! Check out the section on bread makers.

 

Here is the exact description of the directions on how to use this mix:
Automatic Bread Machine: Ingredients (1-1/2 lb Machine/1 lb Machine): Water (Warm – 1 cup + tbsp/7/8 cup); Dry Bread Mix (entire package/measure 2-1/2 cups); Butter, Margarine (Light and whipped margarines do not work well) or Vegetable Oil (2 tbsp – in pieces/1-1/2 tbsp – in pieces); Yeast (entire packet/measure 1 tsp).

 

Hodgson Mill Honey Whole Wheat Bread Mix is formulated especially for 1-1/2 lb electric bread machines, but can be easily adjusted for the smaller one-pounders. Simply follow the grid above and always consult your particular make and model bread machine manufacturer’s directions. Use the whole wheat bread setting on your machine.

 

Oven Baked Bread: 1. Pour contents of package into bowl. Using a fork cut 2 tbsp, butter, margarine (Light and whipped margarines do not work well) or vegetable oil. 2. In another large mixing bowl, mix dry yeast and 1 cup + 1 tbsp warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes. 3. Gradually stir in enough bread mix to make a soft dough, reserving some mix to lightly flour a surface for kneading. Turn dough onto surface and knead until smooth; about 5 minutes. 4. Coat a large, clean mixing bowl with vegetable shortening. Place dough in bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until double (1 to 1-1/2 hrs). 5. Punch down and turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Form dough into a loaf and place into greased 8-1/2 x 4-1/2 x 2-1/2 inch bread pan. Do not cover. Allow to rise in a warm place until dough rises just above top of the pan (30 min to 1 hour). 6. Bake in preheated 350 degrees F oven until golden brown (30 to 35 minutes).
